Types of Training You Can Get in a Health Care Aide Certificate

Being a health care aide isn’t just about knowing how to take care of someone. There’s lots of background knowledge needed and experience with a health care professional before you can go on to realize your full potential as a health care aide. In this blog, we’ll go through a few of the key topics that health care aides are trained for in their educational program, including:

  • Learning about the body and the lifespan

  • Knowing how to work with clients who have diverse needs

  • Getting clinical placement

  • Understanding advanced medication

Learning about the body and the lifespan

A health care aide certificate will first and foremost teach students information about the body and what happens throughout the lifespan. Courses will discuss the study of systems that make up the human body, and what milestones of growth and development look like across the lifespan. With this knowledge, students will go on to give safe and efficient care to their clients based on their needs and what stage they are in their lives.

As well, health care aide training requires students to focus on the role and responsibilities of a health care aide, and how to apply that to a variety of employment settings. Basic care skills and certain life and biological understanding are a transferable quality of health care aides

Knowing how to work with clients who have diverse needs

Not every client will be the same or have the same needs, that’s why health care aide training requires students to learn, discuss, and implement strategies for assisting diverse client groups. Some might have a singular problem, while other clients have many issues, or have a unique situation due to their socio-economic status. It’s important to consider not just physical ailments, but include clients with a mental health diagnosis or developmental delay.

As a health care aide student, you will build on foundational skills and concepts that are presented, and understand how you can care for people with distinctive problems or barriers, even if it’s unfamiliar territory.

Getting clinical placement

In a health care aide certificate, students have to go through many rounds of clinical placement. During the various clinical rotations, students will experience first hand what it’s like to be a health care aide. They will work under the direct supervision of a regulated health care professional. Health care aide training includes working in different settings of continuing care such as home care, supportive living (designated), long term care, senior lodges, group homes and more. There’s exposure to all the settings that a health care aide could potentially work in when they graduate.

Understanding advanced medication

Advanced medication is an additional course certification that health care aides can get. The course teaches how to assist clients with medical delivery. Assisting is to ensure that the client you have is taking their prescription medication the way it was intended, whether that’s for application, injection or ingestion. The assistance will vary depending on the client and their circumstances.

The advanced medication course will give you more training and therefore make you more competitive when you’re on the hunt for a job.
